History with a bit of the unusual

Very nice reading, historical, geographical, scientifically accurate, and has a bit of innuendo scattered throughout to make this book a must read for the college student.

This book is an ethnography of an Irish Island. The name Inis Beag itself is a fictitious name, resorted to for the privacy of the small population of the island. The author and his wife lived on the island for several years during the late 1950s, and this is a record of the information they learned about the island, its traditions, and its culture. The book includes chapters on the island itself (history and climate), traditional ways of making a living (agriculture, farming, and crafts), village and family structures, religion, and emigration. The book is amply illustrated with high quality black-and-white photographs. At the end of the book are a section of references and an annotated list of suggested readings. There is no index.

From Messenger's description, this is a very conservative society (or at least it was so in the late 1950s). Most of the islanders follow age-old occupations. (One interesting description was how the farmers create soil from seaweed mixed with dung.) They are subject to very tight societal controls administered by the priest and headmaster of the school. They are extremely private about sexual matters to the point that young people never receive any instruction about sex up to or even following their wedding day. Male patients are unwilling to undress in front of the island nurse. As Messenger explains "Marriage is looked on [by males] with trepidation, or at least as something less then desirable." As a result, the average age for marriage for men was 35 years, and for women, 25 years, and premarital sex is unknown. About a third of the population never marries at all. Between the aversion to taking on the responsibility of a family, and the need to emigrate for paid work, the population of the island is decreasing. Those who stay on the island are prone to feelings of depression and hypochondria. All in all, it doesn't sound like a very cheery place to live.

Messenger is very fond of statistics and quantification. He seems to have surveyed residents and quantified their answers for just about every topic. For example, when describing the importance of weather prediction skills to the islanders, he notes the existence of some 250 signals traditionally used for predicting the weather. There are 40 varieties of fish, thirty-two householders own 3-man canoes, and so on. Such statistics show Messenger's meticulous efforts at getting his fact straight, however, they can make the reading a bit dry.

The early pioneers in electronics were intrigued by the mystery and wonder of a newly discovered science, whereas people today are attracted by its ability to lend its hand to any application and accomplish almost anything imaginable. Very helpful for learning about DC/AC electronics. It comes with a bonus CD that makes it worth the price of a used copy. My husband, who is an electrician bought this textbook as a refresher and to glean additional information.

I’ve been teaching landscape architectural graphics, construction, and construction documentation for nearly twenty years. My office bookshelf has over four dozen books on graphics and construction documentation. But Landscape Architecture Documentation Standards: Principles, Guidelines, and Best Practices by Design Workshop is by far the best resource on this subject that I’ve ever used. It provides both academics and their students an up to date reference for current office practice in the production of design and construction documents. Bringing Yoga to Life

Simliar to the first book I read by Donna Farhi (Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit: A Return to Wholeness), this book was nothing like I expected, yet still exceptionally wonderful.

I was expecting an overview of the basic ethical principles of yoga. Instead, I was greeted with an intriguing introduction to all the possibilities yoga has to offer, unique angles on the eight-limbed path of true Yoga, and (last but not least) the various "roadbloacks & distractions" that could slow, stop, or reverse your progress.

Like many wonderful teachers and writers, Donna includes personal anecdotes from her own life & her students (without being too specific or identifiable). This makes all of the precepts she covers much more realistic, attainable, and most importantly, worth making the effort for.

Another thing to be adored about Donna (and this book in particular): Donna doesn't sugar-coat anything. This is life, we all make mistakes, we are all imperfect - BUT - we are all also divine and capable. The potential is within us all (it always has been) and the author herself stands at a testament to the life-changing abilities of a genuine Yoga practice.

Simply put, I can easily see why this is must-read book #2 for the Yoga Teacher Training course I am taking ("Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit: A Return to Wholeness" being the first). This is another book that, in my opinion, each & every yoga practitioner should read - and re-read over the course of their journey

Wanna Bet?

This book was recommended to me by a wonderful physical therapist and yoga teacher here in Austin, Mark Uridel. The author was a student of Judith Lasater, a nationally respected yoga guru and physical therapist who, in my experience, walks the walk despite the difficulties of fame. Even if you can't quite release the high expectations that so often diminish a good read, read it anyway because it will exceed those expectations. I ran my highlighter dry, realized I was highlighting all but the glue words but grabbed another highlighter anyway. Farhi's love and understanding of the wisdom of yoga and its ancient, subtle guidance resonate with authenticity and relevance for our short blessed lives on this beautiful but suffering planet. I know, that's a lot of adjectives, but If you're not a kinder, wiser, more gratitude filled person after reading this book, then I owe you a beverage and I will forgo the use of adjectives for one hour.

As a newcomer to Yoga, two months, I really do not have the knowledge to choose the "right" book on that vast subject.
Having said that, this book could not have been better if it had been written for me specifically. I looked up Yoga books in Amazon's Kindle section and for whatever reason chose this one.

This book found me. Only explanation.

When I finish this book I shall read it again. It is so in depth I will learn more with each reading. It is also so accessible that this newcomer was not overwhelmed, confused or put off in any way on his first reading.
