After his triumphs in such works as The Specter of the Rose and Petrouchka, he set out to make ballets of his own, and with his Afternoon of a Faun and The Rite of Spring, created within a year of each other, he became ballet's first modernist choreographer. Then, still in his twenties, he began to go mad. For six weeks in early 1919, as his tie to reality was giving way, Nijinsky kept a diary--the only sustained daily record we have, by a major artist, of the experience of entering psychosis. In some entries he is filled with hope. He is God; he will save the world. In other entries, he falls into a black despair. He is dogged by sexual obsessions and grief over World War I. Furthermore, he is afraid that he is going insane. The diary was first published in 1936, in a version heavily bowdlerized by Nijinsky's wife. The new edition, translated by Kyril FitzLyon, is the first complete and accurate English rendering of this searing document. In her introduction, noted dance critic Joan Acocella tells Nijinsky's story and places it in the context of early European modernism.

Vaslav Nijinsky spent the final six weeks before his permanent consignment to an insane asylum as something a madman in the attic. With his family--wife, young daughters and occasionally, mother-in-law--and household staff downstairs, the legendary dancer retreated to his room in a remote Swiss villa to tangle with his burgeoning psychosis. Fearful that his wife would (as she ultimately did) commit him, and highly suspicious of the physician-cum-amateur psychiatrist who daily came by to examine him, Nijinsky perceived the diary as the only safe haven for the rambling thoughts that were overtaking him. Throughout, the anxiety and anguish are palpable, as Nijinsky writes about his disillusionment with his mentor and lover, Ballets Russes director Serge Diaghilev; his alienation from and distrust of his closest family members; and his fear of insanity and its consequential confinement. His writing becomes more obscure as the weeks progress and he examines his relationship to God, writing "I am God" at one point, and later: "God said to me, 'Go home and tell your wife that you are mad.'" As his schizophrenia evolves, the pace and style of Nijinsky's prose changes radically--toward the end he writes in abstract verse--but he remains, with a dancer's sensibility, attuned to the cadences of his environment. The noises of the household, the ringing of the phone, footsteps down the hall, smatterings of conversations overheard are all registered as a sort of accompaniment to his dance with madness and function perhaps as a final tether to reality.

Nijinsky's wife stumbled upon the diary in a locked trunk some years after her husband disappeared into the abyss of madness and soon released it for publication to feed public interest in her famous mate--but not before she sanitized the manuscript to such a degree (removing references to his homosexuality, overblown ego, bizarre paranoia, and various obsessions with bodily functions and sex acts) that its essence was obscured. Now 80 years after it was written, 20 years after its renegade editor died, and six years after the copyright that Nijinsky's daughters held expired, the unexpurgated version of the diaries faithfully restores the fascinating record of a great artist's struggle for his life.

One of this century's finest male dancers, Nijinsky might have become known as the greatest ballet choreographer of the modern era had his career not ended so early. Nijinsky danced professionally for only 10 years (1907-1917), and his reputation as a choreographer was established by only three ballets, all choreographed for the Ballets Russes between 1912 and 1913. Scandal surrounded his career: under Sergei Diaghilev, his lover and the impresario behind the Ballets Russes, Nijinsky choreographed The Afternoon of a Faun, which contained movements suggestive of masturbation; the premiere of his Rite of Spring, choreographed to Stravinsky's dissonant score, caused audiences to riot and storm out of the theater. After severing ties with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes at age 29, Nijinsky slid into insanity, and these diaries chronicle six weeks (January 19-March 4, 1919) of this period. The publication of this new translation (initially published in bowdlerized form in 1936), which for the first time includes a fourth journal of letters and poems, gives readers a chance to read an autobiography of a great artist during his psychological decline. This does not always make for easy reading: Nijinsky's thoughts are circuitous; he records his experience moment by moment and often breaks his train of thought to describe an incident in the next room. Although he is sometimes lucid, he often writes in contradictions and non sequiturs. Fitzlyon's excellent translation, which provides helpful and nonintrusive footnotes to explain Nijinsky's many linguistic idiosyncrasies, is complemented by Acocella's (Mark Morris) illuminating introduction. (Feb.) FYI: Acocella has just been named as the dance critic of the New Yorker.

This is a thought-provoking look at the life of a man who has been called the "god of the dance." The famous Russian ballet dancer went insane in 1917, and this diary, written in six and a half weeks, records his ever more erratic thoughts, thoughts that at times become almost poetic: "I am an artist whose voice is dance," in conjunction with the more aberrant: "I am God, I am a man, I am man in God." Nijinsky documents his daily routine and carefully notes random thoughts, feelings, suspicions, and occasionally an accurate view of his true reality: "people will think I am insane because I speak of things I do not understand." Actor John Rubinstein's powerful presentation turns this audio into a one-man show, with an amazing job affecting a slight Russian/Polish accent. Very interesting view of the power players in Hollywood!

This book covers the period from the time that the some of the CAA founders worked at William Morris, how CAA was created, how it functioned in it's long heyday, and how it changed when the Young Turks took over after Ovitz left. If you've never seen the inside of the book or read any excerpts, it is not a narrative by the author; instead, it is a compilation of narratives by the founders of CAA, some of the agents, some actors, the Young Turks, and people on the periphery. If you don't know at least who these people are, this book may be very confusing to read. It does provide an interesting insight into the mindset of agents, how they function, what the job entails, and the "it's-good-to-be-King" philosophy of the major power brokers in Hollywood. Yes, they eat their young for breakfast in that town!

Since the narratives are provided by the individuals themselves, I found that there was a lot of back-patting, and "he was so nice", "everybody loved him" etc. etc. etc. That was not genuine and clouded some of the book for me. Come on...this is Hollywood. If you're an agent, and a successful one, you would throw your mother off of a cliff or sell your firstborn to get the best client and/or deal. Having most of the people praise Ovitz when, in reality, he was to the right of Ghengis Khan, was feeble. But I suppose that most of the people in the book are still active in Hollywood so you never burn your bridges - especially in Tinseltown where the powers-that-be NEVER forget ANYTHING.

Comments on the Kindle edition: BAD, BAD, BAD.....in what world do booksellers think they can just copy/paste a hardcover into a Kindle versionn?? It doesn't work. The formatting was terrible in many places; there were "bookmarks" already in the book - what's that about? and....there are photos but 99% of the photos are on one page and captions are either on the page before the photo or after the photo. So if you want to know who's-who in the photo to have to keep going back a page or forward to next page. Ugh!!! I find this is an issue with other Kindle versions of books and it astounds me that we can land a man on the moon but someone can't spend the time to format a hardcover book into a reader-version.

Hooray for Hollywood

Journalist James Andrew Miller has a written a way to long (752 pages in the print edition) and a way too hagiographic oral history of the Hollywood behemoth, Creative Artists Agency. It is filled with anecdotes about famous actors, writers and directors. However, by the end it reads like the promotional material an investment bank would use for an initial public offering, which, trust me, is coming. In their own words Powerhouse tells the story of five break away agents from the William Morris Agency to form Creative Artists in 1975. The lead players are Michael Ovitz, Ron Meyer and William Haber.

Ovitz, of course is the most famous, and is the driving force behind Creative Artists first 20 years. Although he didn’t invent packaging, where an agent puts together all of the key elements of a television series or motion picture, he certainly refined it to a high art. He is also a visionary with respect to technology by fully anticipating video streaming and the delivery content wirelessly.

The early days of Creative Artists are very reminiscent of my days at the old Salomon Brothers. It was an eat what you kill environment and everyone was hungry. In fact Ovitz acted as an investment banker with respect to the sale of Columbia Pictures to Sony and the sale of Universal to Matsushita.

However in 1995 Ovitz leaves for Disney which turns out to be a disaster for all of the parties involved and Haber leaves to run Universal. After they leave the “Young Turks” takeover and Creative Artists continues to thrive, but changes radically when they take in the private equity firm, TPG as a partner. In the 2000s Creative Artists branches out into sports management and continues the Ovitz initiatives in brand management.

The problems with the book are that it is too long and you don’t really hear from by the many people wronged by the agency.

Fascinating especially for people who are pop culture junkies

I'm an entertainment and pop culture junkie so this book was already right up my alley. I know about agencies and heard the names CAA and Endeavor and so forth but didn't have any idea what agencies were or what they did for people. The book is a history from the very beginning of CAA in the 70s right up to the present day. It includes interviews from all the principle founders of CAA, CAA agents, agents from other competitive agencies, executives and celebrities. It is organized in an oral history fashion which is a format that I happen to like. Each section has a narrative introduction but otherwise it is all an oral history.

I've read other reviews that accuse the book of being biased towards CAA or sugarcoating the events but I didn't get that feeling as I was reading it. There are plenty of dissenting views and not very flattering descriptions from quite a few people directed at CAA. There are a few people that you can tell still work there and need to toe the company line and sound like an infomercial but they're pretty easy to identify.

It is a long book but it kept my interest from beginning to end. It goes into some extreme detail that might be boring to some but which I found fascinating (especially the parts about sports representation).

About the Author

Really nothing here

The promise of theta healing is immense, but the vision of accessing our subconscious and unconscious minds seems to be missing from ThetaHealing's approach. The whole premise of re-discovering and re-connecting to who we truly are as expressions of the One Source is to integrate the wounded parts of our self (Ego). "Belief work" from this book actually strengthens the Ego with virtually every "download" starting with the phrase 'I know...'

The suggestion of supplements is completely generic and without any regard to an individual's possible need. And the writing style in describing diseases and disorders is overly simplistic and lacking any depth of someone who has been duly educated and properly trained.

Healing is not anywhere as complicated as listing science's labels (diseases and disorders) of what is essentially disintegrative energies run amok in our integrative energy systems (the human body). When we choose to align our hearts and our minds with that which we truly are (Love), healing happens - no matter what the issue is labeled as.

This book has lots of good information. Several diseases and disorders mostly focusing on the more common issues. Still a good reference for helping with certain problems. I just got it but I use it just about everyday, even if it's just to read over what I read the day before. Organized well easy to find what your looking for.

So after taking my first ACT, I was surprised to find my reading sub-score to be the lowest. After a momentary loss of sanity I decided it would be best for me just to get help rather than belly-ache. I chose this book because it seemed like an easy and effective tool that was exactly what I was looking for. This book raised my reading score significantly, and its no longer the lowest (blast that Math). Buy it if you struggled on the ACT reading, it provides advise and test-taking strategies.

Best 3 minutes you'll spend for ACT reading

First time taking the ACT, scored 29 on reading section...not bad....got this book and did the readings for ten days before the exam and scored a perfect 36!! Best book out there for the least amount of time. Good luck

Life changing and eye opening

To learn that there are those who've gone before us, attained Victory over this world, AND - are willing to assist us to attain that same Victory, is the most eye opening, heart satisfying and heart opening knowledge I've ever found on this earth. All my life, I was asking, searching, trying to understand WHY I was here and for what purpose. This Book, and this Series of Books, answered my questions and gives me clear direction on how attain my goal of spiritual enlightenment. I had read - and read - and read - so many books....all talking about amazing things, amazing spiritual masters, and NOT ONE OF THEM told me how to get there, until I read this Saint Germain Series. This Book in particular, introducing many Masters, taught me how much help we have, just for asking! God doesn't have an ego....just unlimited, unconditional LOVE>
