Nothing new

I read the electronic version of this book in the library. In my opinion, it is nicely presented text, but I found no new information there. It you are familiar with the Guide to Naturalization by The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (available for free from WWW.USCIS.GOV in PDF format), you don't need this book. Questions and answers for Civic test are exactly the same, but in different order. Yes, examples in the book are different from those in the website, but still very obvious and straightforward.

i will give this book five stars if only because of it's accuracy in detailing all information. HOWEVER, nobody should spend any more money than they already have (God knows how much money has been paid to get this far!) since ANY and ALL information written on this book can be found at the immigration website, [...]

Practical and helpful advice for preparing the N-400 form and dealing with the process

We're preparing to apply for citizenship and I'd read this book after having filled out the forms. I fully expected to have to prepare a draft version of our application, review and revise it as needed. I worried that I would spend too much time reviewing and revising -- weeks or months -- out of fear of making a mistake.

I found Ilona Bray's straightforward description of the process and pitfalls helpful particularly because she offers a practitioner's practical advice. I've read other reviewers mention that you can get the same advice elsewhere, but since my own sources were limited to the instructions on how to fill out the N-400 form and Ilona Bray's book, I was relieved to find the information organized and readily available in an easy to find format.

As we opted not to hire an attorney to review our application, I wanted more than the government website and instructions to help guide me through the application and waiting process.

If you have possible issues with your application, you'll need to discuss the specifics with an attorney. But if you meet all the requirements and just want to make sure that your application is filed completely and that the process goes smoothly, Becoming a U.S. Citizen is worth reading, keeping on hand, and referring to throughout the process. I found several tips and suggestions that have helped me in preparing my N-400 application. The tips are the sort that an immigration law practitioner might give you but fortunately without spending several thousands on an immigration lawyer.

The 1954 discovery and subsequent autopsy of a 500-year-old mummified Inca boy, victim of human sacrifice, inspired this archeological, anthropological detective story by Omni and Discovery writer Tierney. His research into the origins of human sacrifice involve encounters among the Incas of the high Andes where priests and witches still conduct sacrificial killings combining Christian and ancient pagan rites, both of which are usually accompanied by heavy consumption of alcohol. Described in detail are methods of victim selection, execution and reasons for these acts--which include deification of the victim, propitiation of gods and of natural forces. Tierney's analysis of the complex evolution of attitudes toward human sacrifice from the actual to the symbolic, e.g., from Crucifixion of Christ to Eucharist, is treated summarily as little more than an addendum to his firsthand accounts of his Andean adventures. Human Sacrifice is not what you think it is.......

The Highest Altar by Patrick Tierney is an amazing first hand account of human sacrifice why it was and is still being done in South America,and around the world all ancient cultures have their stories of a spilling human blood payment to the gods, all wars can be called human sacrifice as well it is an offering to our bloody alien gods....who have done a great job of hiding their existence, but deep research will bring them to the forefront of your consciousness, but many will fight this awareness today in church the pastor talked about the jewish blood sacrifices to god, he described how the perfect unblemished animal was cut up, (in human sacrifice the most perfect beautiful children were sacrificed by the Ancients ), I was stunned its the exact way that human victims are cut up....the pastor said that the blood is the life force that god demands from us, I say not "God" but fallen angels/demons or extraterristial beings who feed off human beings energetically and physically because they have cut them selves off from the Eternal Source. Why don't people get it any bloody sacrifice needed by a god is not the true God.

The Highest Altar is the most important book I've read this year the way he writes its like you are there with him on the adventure of a lifetime, he is a very courageous man who has given me the information that I have been seeking for a lifetime as I am Aztec and was horrified at their sacrifices, and couldn't find any information that answered my question which was WHY hurt other human beings, through my research now I know that they the people who did and do this are terrified of the "gods" who have demanded blood sacrifice for thousands if not millions of years using the upheavels of Nature to get people to murder for the good of all.

Thought-provoking book on ancient and today's human sacrifice

This is one book that will hold you until the end. Whether you are fascinated with human sacrifice, with ancient cultures of South America, with mountain hiking or with little known clues to the Bible, you will find all of that in Patrick Tierney's book.

The author gives a good historical background on the ancient Inca custom of taking children or young adults to the top of high mountains to sacrifice them to the gods. He then visits places in Chile and Peru where shamans allegedly practice human sacrifices even to this day. Tirelessly going from one shaman to another, to victim's families, police and anthropologists, he is able to put the pieces of the puzzle together, in a part that reads like a detective story.

The last part deals with Western civilization's own involvement with human sacrifice in Judaism and Christianity. In fact, claims the author, most if not all religions hide the skeleton of human sacrifice in their closets. Human sacrifice used to be an important element of religious practice that was eliminated in reforms in Judaism only to be brought back to the forefront with the ultimate sacrifice of Christ. Although interesting, that part makes so many various interpretations, most often hastily that it is difficult to digest it all and to take seriously. I thought his interpretations and detective work in the first parts of the book made more sense because they were more carefully articulated.

It is an out-of-print book but, knowing that human sacrifice is still going on in South America now well into the 21st century (look at the news), I think it is an important read, especially since so many books on the ancient Incas are mostly mute with regards to the extent of human sacrifice. This is, all in all, a very thought-provoking book and worth to seek as a second-hand copy.

Animal ABCs by Alisha Weston/Franks is a useful tool to teach the alphabet to young children. Each letter has an animal sporting a funny look or showing off something amusing which will capture the attention of young readers and make learning the alphabet easy and exciting. Whether it's the cat wearing a cool cape, a giraffe that likes to chew gum, or a kangaroo that flies its kite, the author reaches out to kids in an engaging way, making learning a fun process and the book visually appealing. 

I found the book perfect for young children to learn the alphabet. The illustrations and the author's words make the book eye catching and interesting. The illustrations are fun and colorful and the pages will draw readers into the book. It's a good bedtime storybook and parents and grandparents can use it for bedtime story-telling for their kids and grandkids. The book can also be used for interactive sessions in classrooms and school libraries. It's perfect for educators and tutors who are working with young children to teach them the alphabet with the help of pictures and delightful words.

These kinds of books are perfect for young children as they learn new things in a fun way and the pictures and words do not make them feel as if they are learning. J is for the jellyfish I found floating in my juice!

Animal ABCs is an alphabet book perfect for a young child to read out loud by themselves or with an adult. The sentences are easy to read and the illustrations are of different animals in various fun situations. It's educational and sparks the imagination. I imagine that a child would go back to this book over and over once they learn the different letters and their matching storylines. Looking forward to more books by this author!

A wonderfully crafted learning tool!

'Animal ABCs' is one of the more prolific learning tools I have seen for children who are beginning to read and understand the alphabet. Each letter is accompanied with an adorable illustration and sentence which highlights the aforementioned letter in a way suitable for your child to recognize and learn in a fun way. A wonderful book to read to your loved little ones at night and the perfect learning tool. Highly recommended!

Promising Premises Left Undeveloped

I stumbled across and loved Boudinot's debut collection of short stories, The Littlest Hitler, but haven't caught up with his two subsequent novels. So when I saw this oblong little thing, I grabbed it for my train commutes. I don't know if it's the brevity of the twelve stories (they generally take no more then 5-10 minutes to read), or the ill-conceived layout (the typeface for each is pitched to the story's contents or mood, which seems like something I might have done my first year as a designer), but none of them particularly grabbed me. At the heart of most is a genuinely interesting premise, but they tend to have a dashed-off feel, and could use a little more room to breathe and grow.

I especially liked "Readers & Writers" -- about two men who run into each other on a commute and discover they are reading, and have read, the exact same books their entire lives. But I wanted it to go deeper and further than it can in 17 half-pages. A lot of the stories have some kind of basis in pop culture ("The End of Bert and Ernie" is a riff on the breakup of the Sesame Street couple; "An Essay and a Story About Motley Crue" reads like Chuck Klosterman riffing on adolescent dreams), or in speculative fiction ("Robot Sex" is about what it sounds like; "Cardiology" is about a town where everyone has to stay hooked up to a centralized heart), or in work culture ("The Armies of Elfland" is "Office Space" meets Colin Meloy's Wildwood series; "Monitors" and "The Mine" are decent glimpses at how we let work control us). On the whole, these read like morsels of fluff for McSweeny's website.

If "My cat is taking drugs again" sounds like a promising first line, you'll enjoy this collection of unconventional short stories, which range from zany to Kafkaesque. Boudinot's Barthelme-ish prose is imaginatively supported by Jacob Covey's ingenious design work: each story is set in a different font and layout, and the whole production is a wonder to behold. (Watch for the heavy-metal umlauts in the running heads to the Motley Crue story.)

About the Author

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, winner of the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature, was born in 1918. In February 1945, while he was captain of a reconnaissance battery of the Soviet Army, he was arrested and sentenced to an eight-year term in a labor camp and permanent internal exile, which was cut short by Khrushchev's reforms, allowing him to return from Kazakhstan to Central Russia in 1956. Although permitted to publish One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich in 1962--which remained his only full-length work to have appeared in his homeland until 1990--Solzhenitsyn was by 1969 expelled from the Writers' Union. The publication in the West of his other novels and, in particular, of The Gulag Archipelago, brought retaliation from the authorities. In 1974, Solzhenitsyn was arrested, stripped of his Soviet citizenship, and forcibly flown to Frankfurt. Solzhenitsyn and his wife and children moved to the United States in 1976. In September 1991, the Soviet government dismissed treason charges against him; Solzhenitsyn returned to Russia in 1994. He died in Moscow in 2008.

A book you can read over and over again.

I re-read "Cancer Ward" about every two years and every time I fall in love with the main character--Kostoglotov--all over again. This book tell of the lives of patients and staff in a cancer ward in Russia.

Kostoglotov, the main character, is a man unfairly exiled under Stalin. He is a normal person like you or me who is living a life of perpetual exile. And then he gets cancer and comes to the ward barely clinging to life.

The book chronicles the lives of several people in the Cancer Ward. The book follows the lives of a couple of nurses that Kostoglotov flirts with and the life of a nurse he doesn't flirt with. There is the young student, the government official, and other cancer patients. Each one deals with cancer in their own way.

It is a sad, yet uplifting book about cancer and about Stalin, who really was a big dose of cancer for Russia. More people need to know about how cruel Stalin was. How he exiled people in his purges for no reason other than his own paranoia. Good people like Kostoglotov had their lives stolen from them.

In the end all Kostoglotov wants to do is get out of the cancer ward and back to his friends in his town of perpetual exile. Before he goes home he visits a zoo. I don't want to ruin the ending for you, but every time I read the ending I cry.

Thanks Mr. Solzhenitsyn for exposing Stalin for what he was and giving me the opportunity to read about everyday Russian people.

Accurate depiction of the world of the cancer patient

Having just finished reading it for the third time, I believe that Cancer Ward is a very fine novel, rich at many levels: in its depiction of Soviet provincial society in 1955, a poor society just emerging from Stalinism; in its portrayal of many separate characters (doctors, nurses, patients, hospital workers) in that society, many of whose lives have been permanently damaged by the terror and the GULAG, but in different ways; and, as I know from personal experience, in its depiction of the isolated world of the cancer patient, from which the rest of society is seen dimly, as though through dirty glass. In spite of all medical progress, the basics of this world have not changed much in 50 years: the core treatments are still surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, and the side effects both long and short term can still be brutal.
The ending of the book will disappoint those who want a happy ending, or just an ending with all the loose ends tied up. In real life, though, loose ends usually stay loose. My thought is that Solzhenitshyn intended the reader to understand that for the characters and the society who are so damaged by the past there can be no happy endings; the best they can hope for is to continue from day to day, grasping at whatever happiness briefly comes their way.
