This was a very good book by a great author Kamilla. Sophia by the way it was written was underage girl and did a pretty good job entertaining her client. The two characters were amazing. The story line was excellent.

Outstanding! Basic engineering done with history and humor.

My boss gave me this book when I arrived at my first job, and it changed the way I saw the world. It covers the basics of structural engineering from cathedrals to clothing, and does so with a blend of historical references and dry British humor that makes it delightful to read. Only basic math is used. The emphasis is on the basic principles (tension, compression, shear, etc.)and how they apply to real-world examples, ranging from bridge trusses to bias-cut fabrics and bat wings. I'd recommend this book for anyone who's curious about how things work. My sole complaint is that this edition is a bit bulky and might seem intimidating, but that's because the print is fairly large. I preferred the earlier British Penguin edition which was much more compact.

Excellent layman's overview or engineer's refresher

I first read both Structures and Gordon's other book, The New Science of Strong Materials, in the early '80's. I have read them several times since, and am constantly trying to find them because I keep giving them away to people. When I read Gordon's explanations of the history and present state of the engineering art, I look at things as diverse as cathedrals and dogs' bladders in a new way. I remember my training in the more equation-heavy disciplines, and I can compare my 16 years of experience in engineering to the words in the book and say, "Oh yes, that's just the way it is," or "Oh, so that's why that happened. Too bad I didn't think of it at the time."

Scientific popularisation at its best.

In the wonderful tradition of Sagan, Cousteau and Asimov, Professor Gordon shows us that science and technology need not be abstruse and tedious, but can be made both pleasant and fascinating. Structures, or Why Things Don't Fall Down stands perfectly well on its own, but the best benefits are to be derived when reading it in tandem with its sister publication, The New Science of Strong Materials. In both books, Professor Gordon strikes the difficult balance between the ease of exposition and the exactness of detail that characterises only the very best of scientific popularisations. He combines his technical presentation with a warm and self-deprecating wit that will have you feeling that you are not being lectured to, so much as enjoying an engaging explanation from a friend.
For example, in a typical moment of whimsy, Professor Gordon speculates upon the benefits of attaching army surplus chicken feathers onto motor cars - a suggestion designed to evoke a humourous image, except that his preceding explication on the structural properties of feathers is done so well that it lends the idea a certain fanciful credence. The pages are filled with such moments. Professor Gordon delights in drawing parallels between the unlikeliest of phenomena - how an intelligent reflection on the properties of worms led him to the design of a better anchor bracket, or how his introduction to a circus proprietor's somewhat self-conscious invention ended up improving everything from military aircraft to household doors. Through the liberal use of such anecdotes, he leads us, gently but inexorably, to a fuller understanding of the interconnectedness of the physical world.
While his book deals with abstract ideas, Professor Gordon comes across clearly as a practical man. Whereas others would deal only with joints and fastenings, he chooses to title one chapter "Joints, Fastenings and People". He does so with especial purpose because his hands-on and sometimes tragic experience has won him the understanding that most joints fail not from want of material strength, but from human negligence. Anyone who has ever taken responsibility for the work of others will sympathise with his observation that: "All of our efforts to persuade [the aircraft workers] that a badly made joint was morally equivalent to manslaughter foundered on a deeply-held folk tradition that it was silly to fuss about such things and that strength is a boring subject anyway." Professor Gordon always manages to marry each abstraction with a human element and this is what makes his narrative so engaging and so relevant.
While extremely well written, this is not a book for dilettantes. Professor Gordon does not evade mathematics, although he keeps it to a minimum and always to the point. Where necessary, he does not spare the technical details, but he has both the mastery and the skill to make it go down easily and the reader always comes away from the experience feeling enriched. Those who are completely mathematically phobic can still follow the general thrust of his narrative while skipping the formulae.
This is popularisation at its best and Professor Gordon's works should be required reading not only for aspiring engineers but for all university undergraduates.

About the Author
Sabrina Wilk is a landscape architect, born in Toronto. She specialized in visual representation, analogue and digital graphics in landscape design and has worked with many different landscape architecture offices in Germany, Canada and the UK. Since 2005, she is full-time Professor of Drawing and Visualization at the Faculty of Landscape Architecture, at the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf. She has also held lectureships in graphics and design at the University of Greenwich and at University College Dublin. She founded the LineScape drawing initiative in 2007 to promote and foster drawing practise and techniques within the
landscape architectural professions.

Beautiful book! Excellent for a text book or gift to a landscape architect. Substantial content, ranges from across many topics. Very nicely bound- I love the elastic closure and bookmark feature. It seems very classic. I am a landscape architectural instructor, and I will give this to my husband and buy another to keep at work!

Five Star Rating for this Hill

We're avid readers and regularly buy and read a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction. I've read Gerri Hill's other novels and they are good reads. Some are very good. Those of us of a certain age can all too easily remember when there were virtually no books that affirmed or even recognized our daily lives, except to cast us as serial killers and psychos. Perhaps for that reason, we may not always hold current writers to a sufficiently high standard. That said, Ms. Hill has always delivered a quality novel. Devil's Rock is, however, is much better than good. It represents a significant step forward in her work and is an outstanding, quality work of fiction. Devil's Rock is a good story, well told. The characters -- all of the characters -- are thoroughly rendered and allowed to resolve themselves in a way that is true to their nature, not just a formula predicated by a genre. The main characters are complex and compelling. Their attraction draws the reader in. The love scenes are sensual and lyrical. If you're looking for a good novel, I highly recommend Devil's Rock. If you're one of Gerri Hill's regular readers, your loyalty will be richly rewarded. If you're a brand new reader, you're in for a treat.

Deputy Andrea Sullivan (Andi), left L.A and moved to Sedona. She thought she would leave her past and secrets behind her and have a fresh start. It was not to be. A series of murders puts paid to her peaceful existence bringing the horrors of L.A back in full force to her. The FBI are called in and Andi finds herself working with the arrogant Agent Cameron Ross. Andi dislikes Cameron at first, but gradually comes to like and respect her as they join forces to investigate the killings. The clues lead Andi and Cameron to believe that Patrick Doe, the serial killer Tori Hunter had investigated and lost, had resurfaced. Andi and Cameron pull out all the stops to solve the case and catch the killer. At the same time they find themselves losing the fight against the attraction that is consuming them both.
I've read all of Gerri's books and I would say that this one is one of the best she has ever written. Definitely the best out of the detective stories. I just could not put this one down and would really recommend it.

I am a big Gerri Hill fan. I love her ability to move between strictly romance and crime genres. Unfortunately, I found this offering to be somewhat mediocre.

Basically, everything just felt too easy. The main charachters open up to eachother too quickly, their emotional scars are too similar and their attraction to eachother goes from 0 to 60 way too fast to seem genuine. The plot line comes across as confusing, but it also gets resolved too easily. The main charachters literaly stumble upon the perpetrator.

Of course, Hill's writing is top notch, but I just expected more. Her "Target", "The Killing Room", and "The Scorpion" are so good that "Devil's Rock" left me unsatisfied.

Awesome Book! Great Tips!

This is a great book for men who have hard time approaching women. It is full of useful tips and tricks to get you to open up and feel more confident about yourself. I think that a real relationship should start with a friendship and build into something more. The hard part is distinguishing if the other person wants it to go further.

In this book King guides you on how to pick up on the subtle hints. If there are no hints from the other person, he tells you how to tell them you want more out of your friendship. Its a huge gamble sometimes, you could end up losing a friend but on the flip side you could be missing out the love of your life because you were afraid to take a chance.

Overall, this is a great book, Well thought out and well written. I would highly suggest it to anyone who needs a little boost to talk to someone.

Blessed to be out of the Friend-Zone

I have always known that breaking the friend-zone but I was curious if it would be something I could do in my own life! I had heard that Patrick was a to the point author while also being super hilarious. That is true! I read this very quickly and I had started trying out the tips on my best male friend who I have been in love with for 2 years, and it seemed to be working. I thought it as gradual at first but maybe the mutual attraction helped and we are actually engaged to be married!

Funny story, I told him about this book later and he actually said he had read it too! Is that serendipity or what? Anyway, I really feel like anyone can break the friend-zone on their own, but with Patrick's help you might actually have a lasting awesome relationship that is just as wonderful as your friendship.

Me, I had no idea I was putting women on a pedestal and treating them differently... why would I do it on purpose? I thought I was treating them a way that would make them fall for me... how wrong I have been over the years. Thanks, Patrick, for the advice in this book. I think that things will be better for me now... like GI Joe says, "Knowing is half the battle."

Every working and instructing dental professional should readthis text concerning medically compromised patients. It updates, aswell as reviews, the important topics that are seen every day in private practice. Especially important is the areas of TB, HIV, and diabetes, although recent information may need to be added by the practioner (check out internet sites for these). Introductory tables are a must for reference in a clinical situation. I have used it a reference text in my clinical practice and in my continuing education courses.

This was an invaluable book that I only glanced at a few times during dental school, but during both my hospital based-general practice residency and pediatric residency was my constant guide. It provides both medical and dental management for most encountered problems that patients present with and has lots of great quick reference tables!

A little bit out-of-date in the way body systems are reviewed in the Center (body) part of the book. Principally, the single section that I found valuable throughout my Dental school was the summary review of systems that is offered at the front of the book, which worked as a fast reference (basically, I tore that section off from the rest of the book!). Nevertheless, it might still work in a better way when it comes to being used by some residents in certain fields like that of surgery, GPR, AEGD, and so forth where they need to go over the boring center (body) of the book.

Fantastic Object

As a die hard lover of Mark Ryden's work, this is truly a gem. While it is tiny, and thusly the images are tiny, it is a wonderful object to have. It does contain many high quality images of Mark rydens most iconic blood covered children,which are amazingly beautiful and moving. It is also bound in red leather. Not only does it contain Mark Ryden's art, it becomes an art objects in and of itself. Lovely!

I like all the Mark Ryden's book,also this one!!! but this is like a museum's souvenir, it's really small, one pocket book!!! But for me is always a precious pice of my Mark Ryden's collection!!!

Get this collection and an Official Guide 13th and you are set

I has a chance to review a preview set, and I see a number of meaningful changes in this edition:

- GMAT Roadmap and IR books are now included with this set, making it a total of 10 books
- The Quant books have been improved in terms of layout and structure (though content is mostly the same)
- The Verbal books have undergone a pretty significant improvement in terms of content (still analyzing the changes; check back in a few days for complete analysis)
- Now the series start with Fractions/Decimals/Percents, then go into Algebra, Word Problems, Geometry, and Number Properties. (I feel this is a good improvement - first, it is getting rid of some of the strange names MGMAT used and second, Number Properties was a pretty tough book to use as the first step)

If you are just starting out with GMAT prep - get this bundle; it's a good deal for the Manhattan GMAT Guides (separately they cost close to $150). These books don't emphasize tricks or easy ways to 700+ score, instead they methodically cover areas tested, and should be pretty much all you will need (besides the Official Guides - see below for links). If this is above your budget, then would recommend you pick the best of the pack:
- The GMAT Roadmap Great collection of wisdom (see my review of this book)
- Number Properties Guide (condensed overview of Arithmetic and strategies for saving time/solving questions more effectively)
- Word Propblems Guide (includes some of the hardest topics - probability, combinations, and statistics)
- Sentence Correction (the best book out there on SC)
- Critical Reasoning (only second to PowerScore CR but by a slim margin)
- Reading Comprehension (there are no other dedicated RC books on market really)
Between these 5 books you should have 80-90% of the GMAT covered and the rest could be picked up from the remaining books and practice with the Official Guides. You can throw in a Kaplan Premier as well - a good intro to GMAT book with 6 free GMAT Tets. It is a good starter book to get your feet wet, but definitely not a must.

To make the most use out of the MGMAT guides, you will need the Official Guide 13th and also OG Verbal 2nd and OG Quant 2nd editions are recommended. The guides refer to these 3 books for additional practice questions. If you own previous versions of the Official Guide books, you can use those too with a translation table available from MGMAT's website.
*** Each book comes with access to 6 online gmat tests and additional question banks. Don't spend money on these as they are pricey ($40 for 6 tests on the MGMAT website).

Also, if you are new to the GMAT, download 2 official practice tests from GMAC and take one of them before you start prepping to get your level - very helpful to track your progress along the way but don't waste these tests - they use real retired gmat questions and though it is possible to recycle them (there are close to 900 questions in the banks), would recommend you use something less valuable for your practice such as MGMAT tests included with these books).

One more thing, don't rush into questions and tests - you will only hurt your self confidence, instead methodically cover each math and verbal topic and only after you are done with each of the sections move on to take the tests (take math only after you are done with math and verbal only after done with verbal). Final word of advice - the main mistake (esp in verbal) is not following strategies. Whichever books or strategies you use (they are all pretty similar between MGMAT, PowerScore, and Kaplan) - follow them EXACTLY. These people are getting big bucks to develop methods to improve score and maximize performance - don't try to be smarter and change things around. Unless you are scoring 750+, I would follow each step of the strategy to the "T". If the book says to read the CR question twice, then that's what you do even though it may seem that it is faster to read it once - trust me, there is a reason why you read it twice. If you want to get 700+ and not worry about the GMAT, stick to the strategies and keep creativity low.

Excellent if you have time to invest

I created my amazon account just to be able to express my thanks and review this product. The Manhattan GMAT series is very thorough, expanding on all the relevant concepts to an appropriate level of depth. Studying for 7-9 weeks on a daily basis (approx. 2 hours/day) allowed me to raise my initial practice score results of around 640 to around 740. The questions on the final exam are comparable and I managed to hit 730. I'm sure I couldn't have done this without these books which were much more helpful than the more simple Kaplan alternatives. If you have time to invest in studying the GMAT (1-3 months), buy this set along with the 13th edition official guide (which you NEED to answer the end of section questions of Manhattan).

Wonderful Review Set, and Definitely Will Get You Geared In Focused!

I can't harp on the necessity to prepare for the GMAT as it is essential to at least review its contents in order to attain a solid score. The setup in this book is very straightforward, as the explanations and tips are stout. Go for it, you won't regret it as the cost more than makes up for having your very own "course-at-home."

But, I advise you: you have to be disciplined. I'll say it again, and this time in CAPS: YOU HAVE TO BE DISCIPLINED.

I prepared for about around 8 weeks, taking 10 CATS, and along with OG's Review --- while spending around 3 hours per day (non-stop, as this is a great endurance build-up strategy), and I scored a 670 on my test. This was after scoring a 480, three months prior.

You can do it! Just get this set, and the OG Review questions, and you'll be well on your way to knocking out the most annoying part of the MBA process! Go for it, it'll even improve your skill sets for future business employment.

About the Author

Emory Douglas was the Black Panther Party's Minister of Culture and chief art director for the party's important newspaper for twelve years. In these roles, he gave visual dimension to the party's revolutionary message and mission, broadening the party's impact within a larger cultural framework. Sam Durant is a Los Angeles-based artist. Danny Glover, the accomplished actor, producer, and director best known for his Lethal Weapon movies, attended San Francisco State during the years the Black Panther party was active in the Bay Area. He's credited the party with having a profound influence on both his creative development and political consciousness. Amiri Baraka is a writer and political activist who lives in Newark, New Jersey. Kathleen Cleaver, attorney, author, and senior lecturer at Yale University and Emory Law School, joined the Black Panther Party in 1967. St. Clair Bourne is a veteran filmmaker. Colette Gaiter is an associate professor at the University of Delaware. Greg Morozumi is artistic director of the EastSide Arts Alliance in Oakland, California. Sonia Sanchez is a poet.

VERNACULAR SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes when images from newspapers or TV are taken out of context they can fall flat out of meaning or context. Not so for the revolutionary work of Emory Douglas. Douglas who was the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party from 1968-1980 and it's weekly newspaper artist amassed more works for the paper in a short period than most artists in a lifetime. But quantity is not the focus here but quality, growth and diversity. Emory Douglas is a prolific artist; his one page pieces included in the Black Panther newspaper were captivating and profoundly moved individuals all over the world no matter what language they spoke. His work has influenced every generation of artists/writers/activists who found their way into his work. It is interesting to note that while Emory's finished work was incredibly elaborate looking his tools of choice were simple pen, marker, tape and paper. His palette always represented and reflected the working class.

Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas focuses on many of Emory's best works and includes forward and texts from former Panther Chairman Bobby Seale, Kathleen Cleaver, Amiri Baraka (still NJ Poet-Lauriat in my book)and Danny Glover among a few.

A definite must for anyone and everyone!!!!!!!

Book is being re-issued in Feb. 2014!

Very glad to see that this book, which should have a much wider audience, is being re-issued by Rizzoli in early 2014. Emory Douglas was a passionate, talented artist. Without his work, the Panthers would have lost one of their best means of communication. He's a hero.
