Eugene Moutoux, educator and author, taught at four universities and three high schools prior to his retirement in 2004. He has written books on sentence diagramming, Latin derivatives, and the German language and maintains a large web site that includes, among other things, a German course, Latin derivatives, and sentence diagrams.

Around the turn of the century, Gene's penchant for grammar led him to a thorough study of sentence diagramming, the rudiments of which he, like Kitty Burns Florey, author of Sister Bernadette's Barking Dog, learned as a child from an elementary-school teacher.

About the Author

Gene R. Moutoux lives in New Albany, Indiana, just across the river from Louisville, Kentucky. He is the father of three children and the grandfather of seven. He has a Ph.D. in German from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Excellent! Great for advanced students and adults.
By Alex Wilson
SUMMARY OF REVIEW: Diagramming Step by Step is a five star superior, advanced textbook/workbook for sentence diagramming. I was compelled to buy this book because I remember how fun and demystifying sentence diagramming can be for the student. Similar to crosswords, sentence diagramming can be a fun and challenging game. For students preparing for SATS, ACTS or other standardized tests, this textbook/workbook will hone your grammar skills, preparing you for your test(s). Note, this book is no 4th grade walk in the park, for that you're better off with Eugene Moutoux's Drawing Sentences: A Guide to Diagramming, which starts with the absolute basics, slowly but thoroughly building a solid knowledgebase. In contrast, in this book (Diagramming Step by Step) Moutoux rapidly covers the basics, moving the student along at a challengingly fast but equally rewarding pace. Reiterating the true value of this teaching tool and standardized test prep workbook, the "Writing Correctly" section after each sentence diagramming lesson is my absolute favorite gem, teaching students how to properly use adverbs, when to you "whom," and so much more.

FULL REVIEW: As a professional writer, I bought this book to improve my grammar and writing. I'm always looking to perfect my writing skills, whether it's learning how to write a compelling story, down to correctly applying grammar rules. So far, I'm enjoying the lessons in this workbook/textbook. I find each lesson to be informative, providing several examples for each lesson, including many sentences for the student to practice diagramming. The book covers all the basics of grammar, but moves quickly. It's great for a refresher for people who generally know proper grammar; it is not a book for a student just learning grammar rules. If you're still learning the basics of grammar, this book is a bit too advanced - it moves too quickly.

What this book does masterfully is teach you how to DIAGRAM SENTENCES. It gives 6-10 examples ("steps") of diagramed sentences expressing the new rules for each lesson, than it provides 10 or more sentences for you, the student, to diagram. There is ample space to write answers in the book, so one doesn't even need an extra pad of paper. I sat on my couch listening to music while diagramming away with nothing more than this book and a pen.

The answer key is excellent, and is large enough to easily be read. (The answers are at the end of the book - teachers and homeschoolers be aware!) The amount of provided examples increases as the lessons increase in complexity. There are 155 steps in all, as the title states. By lesson five, the student is diagraming sentences like, "Not surprisingly, the fatuous man loves a diffident woman." Lesson twenty-two has sentences like, "A year and a half after they moved to Cincinnati, they moved back to California." There are 100-word sentences, 145 word sentences, and larger.... Basically, this book moves rapidly and will challenge the reader, even if the reader happens to be a grammar teacher or professional writer! Further emphasizing the power of this book as a teaching tool, Moutoux constantly reinforces lessons taught in prior chapters, helping to solidify in the students' minds this dense workbook/textbook of grammar rules.

By the way, I really love the "Writing Correctly" lessons following each section. These little teaching gems quickly (often on one side of a page) remind the reader of frequent grammar mistakes, little know grammar rules and peculiarities, and often overlooked editorial blunders. Here's an example: "Everyone must bring ["his or her" or "their"] pens and pencils.")

If you're on the fence whether you should buy Diagramming Step by Step or Moutoux's Drawing Sentences: A Guide to Diagramming, here's a word from the author:
"Should you buy this book if you already have 'Drawing Sentences'? Not necessarily, but if you are looking for additional diagramming challenges for yourself or your students, you will find plenty in this book. Should you buy this book instead of 'Drawing Sentences'? Again, not necessarily. In general, I think 'Drawing Sentences' is a better choice for younger learners and 'Diagramming Step by Step" a better choice for older teens and adults...."

I'm giving Diagramming Step by Step five stars because it's an exceptional teaching tool, and for me it's a fun little brainteaser. When crosswords get old, and Sudoku isn't doing it for you, maybe you should give Diagramming Step by Step a try.

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!
By John L
I'm still working my way through this wonderful book. It is a college-level text which explains grammar as I've never seen it. The examples are precise and thorough and the exercises are the same (they exactly match the material and exercises so everything is crystal clear). I've been enjoying diagramming and over the past year have bought a number of books and courses. This is the best. I highly recommend this book. It's worth the money.

Bes resource currently available
By Ella McCrystle
A lovely spiral-round book, easily copied for extra practice, will full answer keys and tons of digestible information on parts of speech, case and all parts of grammar, that teaches how to diagram even the most complex sentence. For high-school age or higher, I'd guess, I purchased this book while studying foreign languages to brush up on English parts of speech. By the end of this book, you will be diagramming long and complex sentences with ease, and you will know exactly what every clause, phrase and word in a sentence is doing there. I still believe diagramming is the best tool for cementing real knowledge of the English Language. If you only want one of Moutoux's books, this is probably the one to get, but both are wonderful.

Tolkien's Failed Quest, by E. Michael Jones

Tolkien got the main symbols in The Hobbit from Richard Wagner's Ring cycle, but he was testy and sensitive whenever Wagner's name was mentioned. The problem was Wagner's anti-Semitism. The English had a long history of philo-Semitism that did not mesh with Wagner's views, leading to an artistic conflict that Tolkien could not resolve, and ultimately to an incoherent book. In purging Wagner's symbols of their anti-Semitism, Tolkien purged them of their meaning as well, for the real issue in Wagner's Das Rheingold is capitalism, not anti-Semitism. And if capitalism is the real issue, England must be the villain, which is unacceptable to Tolkien, an English patriot. Once rearranged to suit English sensibilities, though, those symbols lose their power, meaning, and coherence.

After reading E. Michael Jones's intellectual tour de force, you'll never view Tolkien's saga the same.

One of the Best Criticisms of Tolkien I Have Ever Read
By Joe Keenan
In twenty some pages E. Michael Jones explicates some of the "failures" almost every reader of Tolkien feels upon reading Tolkien. To me, there was always the feeling, "Yeah, there's something great about this work, but.....am I missing something?" Yes, it turns out I was missing something big time. Jone's contends that Tolkien sought to reset his beloved "Northern Thing" in England to rescue it from the tainted embrace of Wagner. Wagner mined the Northern Thing for his own Ring Trilogy, Wagner was later a darling of the Nazis, Wagner thus tainted the Northern Thing with Antisemitism. Tolkien sought to remove this taint of racism from the Northern Thing by resetting it in England and retelling the mythos. Simultaneously, he would be gifting his beloved England with its' own foundation myth.

Jones argues that in resetting and retelling the Wagnerian mythos in England Tolkien stripped the story of its' deeper meaning. I would (and do) disagree, but the points he makes are cogent and thought provoking. Given the truncated nature of this "book" the insights are arguments contained within outshine (IMHO) volumes written by others. A truly groundbreaking work that led to me returning to reading Tolkien and developing a much deeper appreciation for all of Tolkien's work.

An very interested topic, Tolkien's avoidance of his most important source for the Rings. I hope that Jones or someone writes a much more thorough analysis, but this is a quick start.

Much as you'd expect from yet another 'voice of the oppressed'
By Angeln
Not sure it matters that the author seems to understand very little about Tolkien when you consider the predictable anti-English tone of his pronouncements elsewhere and the meaningless phrases attributed to him such as 'ethnic Catholics'. Language-abuse is common among Irish-wordshipping American authors and assigning all the ills of the world to 'WASPS' no less so. Serious students of Tolkien or Wagner [axe-grinders excepted] are warned they will find little to interest them here. Do not confuse understanding the Ring with talking through it.

Mary Anning is probably the world's best-known fossil-hunter. As a little girl, she found a fossilised sea monster, the most important prehistoric discovery of its time. Best-selling author Laurence Anholt turns Mary's fascinating life into a beautiful story, ideal for reading aloud. From Publishers Weekly
Anholt's cumbersome and text-laden story centers on the early years of Mary Anning, born in 1799 and known in her native England for her discovery of ancient fossils. From the moment that her beloved father, nicknamed "Pepper" for his "speckled beard," extracts a "snakestone" (a fossil of a snake) from the clay cliffs near their seaside home, Mary spends her days searching alone for similar "curiosities," while peers taunt her with the titular nickname. Soon after her father dies, Mary discovers a dog (with a coat like "speckled pepper") near his grave. Encouraged by the Philpot sisters, local scientists, the mournful girl continues to collect fossils and searches for the giant sea monster's bones, which, legend has it, lay hidden in the cliffs. Her devoted pet leads his young mistress to the skeleton of this ichthyosaur, then vanishes. As with the death of Mary's father, the text glosses over the dog's disappearance, but readers will likely see it as a shadow cast over the discovery and marking another significant loss in young Mary's life. Moxley's (Skip Across the Ocean) vividly hued, primitivist artwork features some creatively skewed perspectives as well as several potentially disturbing images: a farmhouse teeters on the edge of eroding cliffs, while nearby are half-submerged cows and a person apparently gesturing in distress. Anholt convincingly lays the groundwork for Anning to go on to become a noted scientist and local hero, but youngsters will likely find this account of her childhood sad rather than celebratory. Ages 5-9.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4-Mary Anning, born in England in 1799, made an astounding discovery at the age of 12 when she unearthed the first full skeleton of an ichthyosaur in the cliffs above her home in Lyme Regis. Anholt begins his picture-book biography with a dramatic episode in which baby Mary is said to have been struck by lightning. The well-shaped, fictionalized account creates a cozy view of her relationship with her father, who taught her to recognize the many forms of fossils in the crumbly Dorset cliffs before his death when she was perhaps 10 or 11. A mysterious, small dog Mary finds in the cemetery becomes the agent in finding the enormous fossil. Two wealthy women, allegedly scientists, tutor Mary as she develops a small business selling fossils as curiosities to tourists. Pleasing folk-art views spread across the pages in luscious blues and greens, magenta, and pumpkin, following the plucky child's odyssey that led to her lifelong contribution to paleontology. Children will be attracted by the jacket view of dinosaurs climbing the path through the cliffs below Mary. Picture bands bordering one side or the other of most pages handsomely unify each spread. The substantial text reads aloud well. The author provides a short closing note on Anning's place in science and also claims that she is the inspiration of the traditional rhyme "she sells seashells by the seashore." No attributions of factual material are provided.

An enjoyable story. The somewhat cartoon-like illustrations - making beautiful use of rich colours that saturate the page - may appeal to slightly younger readers.

Age appropriate, well written, nicely illustrated.
By MidwesternUS
I bought this for my four year old daughter and she loves it. The writing is clear and age appropriate. The illustrations are well-rendered, imaginative and appealing. The book itself is well made - I got a used former library edition, and it was in excellent shape. I will be looking for other works by this author. There is also a nice postscript covering some additional detail of Mary Anning's life inside the back cover that provides some 'grownup' context for further reference. Overall, excellent book.

Follow your dream
By John R Flinn
I especially liked this book because it gives young children (especially girls) encouragement to follow their passion in learning about the natural world. This is my grandaughters favorite book and she has shared it with many of her friends. Like many 6 year olds she loves to learn about dinosaurs and this book and its wonderful illustrations was a winner.

Excellent resource for our dinosaur project. The life story of Mary Anning, one of Britains most famous paleantologists. Very child friendly as she was a child when she found the ichthyosaurus.

After a mysterious appearance by Charles Lindbergh, it’s up to Jonah to save his town in the seventh book of the New York Times bestselling The Missing series, which Kirkus Reviews calls “plenty of fun and great for history teachers as well.”

It’s morning as usual at the Skidmore household—until Charles Lindbergh, the famous historical pilot, appears in their living room. Jonah can hardly believe his eyes—and then Lindbergh grabs Katherine and vanishes again. And that’s not all. Chip, Andrea, and all the other children from the plane have disappeared too. And worst of all, Jonah’s parents and all the other adults in his town have de-aged into children.

Jonah is the only one left, and the only one who can save everyone. With the help of de-aged JB and Angela, he has to collect the clues. And they lead directly back to Gary and Hodge, and a terrible plot that could mean the end of everything Jonah has ever loved. Can Jonah put the pieces together before time runs out?

Revealed Reveals Poor Writing
By Kindle Customer
Feeling let down after this much awaited sequel. While it was good to finally learn about Jonah's true identity (not what I expected at all!), the book has so many time shifts and alternate time lines and potential time lines that it was almost impossible to follow.

The past, present, and future keep overlapping with no sense whatsoever and time gets mysteriously fixed despite disasters that must have shaken the time infrastructure on a ten on the Richter scale.

There is no real continuity in this book and events seem random. Since both Caught and Risked were brilliant, I was looking forward to some more excellent Haddix writing in Revealed, but this book fallls short of the mark.

I know that everyone's going to buy this book simply to find out Jonah's true identity. You may want to ask a friend or read a review, and then wait to borrow the book from your local public library.

Not her best book...
By Mariel Ralston
I have loved Haddix for years and have enjoyed most of her books. This book is not one of my favorites or one that I will be revisiting any time soon.

Pros-
Mystery surrounding main character solved
Interesting characters
Feels like the end of the series

Cons -
Pacing is off... Way too much talking and not enough action/story movement
It was hard to follow all of the paradoxes as an adult... If I as an adult had problems with this book, I am sure the intend audience will too
The dialogue didn't flow
Jonah's past

Overall this book is one I would not recommend. If you want to know what happens, skip to the last chapter or so and read the review summary between JB and Jonah. I wish I had.

Completed
By E.J. Jones
Sometimes I wonder if the seven-book series is becoming the new trilogy. J. K. Rowling and Garth Nix started the trend, and other authors have jumped on the bandwagon, including, apparently, Margaret Peterson Haddix. Unfortunately, her seventh and final “Missing” installment falls short of the quality of some of the earlier ones. However, it’s worth reading if only because we finally learn the true identity of Jonah Skidmore.

Jonah is facing one of his worst dilemmas yet: Charles Lindbergh has appeared in his living room, kidnapped his sister Katherine and all of the other missing kids from history, and caused every adult in the town to revert back to Jonah’s age. It’s up to Jonah to team up with the de-aged Angela and JB in order to save the kids, bring the adults back to normal, and foil Lindbergh – who just might be Jonah’s famous father.

This book went wrong in one major way: Haddix allowed herself to get too wrapped up in time travel rules and paradoxes. Her acknowledgments page shows that she may have had an inkling of this, but I’m not sure she noticed just how confusing her writing gets. “Revealed” was a good hundred pages longer than most other “Missing” novels, and I’m guessing about eighty percent of that was attempts to say, “So if this person did this before this and after this, doesn’t that mean there would be like EIGHT MORE branches of time?” I’m exaggerating, but for all the confusion I felt while reading this book, there might as well have been eighteen possible outcomes of Jonah’s actions. This made Haddix’s style suffer, too; it seemed almost like she got tired with all the paradoxes and didn’t bother to make her narrative consistent with previous books. The style that was previously casual and realistic became forced and cheesy, but maybe that’s just because I’m a little older now than I was when the series began.

However, the suspense in “Revealed” was fantastic. Haddix hasn’t lost the art of creating twisting, turning plots that leave her readers on the edge of their seats. She keeps us guessing what will happen to Jonah and Katherine until the very end. That end didn’t feel much like an ending to me, though; it happened pretty quickly despite the length of the book. I would have liked a little more time to understand the conclusion and say goodbye to some of my favorite characters.

Even so, I’d call “Revealed” a fairly worthwhile read. It was disappointing in some ways, but I was sorry for it to end. That’s always a sign of at least a half-decent book.

*Postscript, several months after this review was written: I just found out that "Revealed" is not the last book in the "Missing" series; there's another coming out this September (maybe August). That puts a few things into perspective about this book.

Cultural Writing. Political Science. Provo staged political and cultural interventions into the symbolic and everyday spaces of Holland from 1962-1967. In this first book-length English-language study of their history, Richard Kempton narrates the rise and fall of Provo from early Dutch "happenings" staged in 1962 to the "Death of Provo" in 1967. He chronicles Robert Jasper Grootveld's anarchist anti-cancer campaign, the riots against Princess Beatrix's marriage to an ex-Nazi, and the famous White Bicycle program. He also comments on parallel contemporary and near-contemporary movements (including Dada and Situationism), Amsterdam's previous anarchist traditions, the spread of Provo through Holland and the development of the Kabouter party, and ends by offering an existentialist critique of Provo and other anarchist movements of the 1960s.

"Absurd and artistic as well as effective and influential, today’s Left could learn a lot from the Provo’s spirited anarchy." — Stephen Duncombe, author of Dream: Re-Imagining Progressive Politics in an Age of Fantasy

"Thanks to Kempton’s engaging history, Amsterdam’s Provos will careen into your heart on their white bicycles, toss you a chicken, and renew an anarchism that both provoked authority and promised a free and communal civic space." — Cindy Milstein, Institute for Anarchist Studies

About the Author
Richard Kempton is a retired librarian living in Los Angeles. He lived in Amsterdam in the early 60s, and came to Provo in 1965 when his Dutch wife wrote a paper on Provo Speech for a class. Her interest inspired him to write this book because he couldn’t find one to read.

youth countercultures, May 1968
By Carol Cooper
Excellent overview of the Dutch version of groups like Situationist International. So many of the student anarchist groups of the 1960s have had their early histories erased or ignored. I had to follow the pop culture breadcrumbs left by Jon Savage's *England's Dreaming*, and *The Situationist International Reader* to find out about Provo. The international rebellion of May 1968 rolled through countries from Italy and France to the US and Brazil. What's left of them are mostly artistic innovations. This book tells you more about what the political aspirations were about.

quite good
By Chuck Morse
In the mid-1960s, a loose band of artists, hippies, and anarchists burst onto the political stage in the Netherlands. Known as the Provos (as in to provoke), they led a mini-rebellion against the established order that rattled elites and left behind an inspired legacy of anti-authoritarian activism.

Richard Kempton documents this legacy in his recently released, Provo: Amsterdam's Anarchist Revolt, the first book-length history of the group in English. He traces the emergence, highpoints, and decline of the Provos, in addition to providing tangential but interesting appendices on topics such as the relationship between the Provos and the Situationists, the history of anarchism in Amsterdam, and others. He does a good job at placing the group in the context of the radical currents from which it emerged and at relating the Provos' trajectory to some of the political peculiarities of the Netherlands. While a deeper examination of the group's ideas and internal organization would have enriched the book, I found it to be thoughtful, informative, and fun to read. (For a quick introduction to the Provos, you may wish to check out this article as well as this one.)

Kempton illustrates the Provos' extraordinary ability to expose the contradictions of the liberal democratic society in which they lived while making authorities look absurd in the process. Of their many feats that he records, their "White Bicycle Plan" is surely the most famous. It began as a response to the traffic jams and air pollution plaguing Amsterdam: instead of passively accepting the automobile's toxic domination of urban life, the Provos pressed the municipal government to give out vast numbers of unlockable, white bikes throughout the city. These cycles-easily identifiable due to their color-would be available to any passerby who felt like riding one. He or she could take it to his or her destination but, once there, would be obliged to leave it for other citizens. This ingenious plan was clearly a sensible, low-cost, and environmentally friendly way to meet at least some of Amsterdam's transportation needs.

The Provos distributed fifty bikes at their own expense to jump start the program but immediately ran into problems with the police, who objected to their attempt to socialize the means of transportation. In fact, the cops impounded the bikes furnished by the Provos on the pretext that doling out unlocked bicycles "encouraged theft." In other words, they took bicycles to prevent them from being taken!

The Provos were naturally delighted to find the police offering Amsterdamers such a concrete lesson in the bankruptcy of the criminal justice system: thanks to their unintentional complicity in the Provos' scheme, the city became a classroom in which attentive residents could learn a lesson normally buried in obscure anarchist pamphlets and disquisitions: the cops' primary objective is not to serve the people but rather to protect the status quo, no matter how noxious and irrational it might be.

The "White Bicycle Plan" was one among multiple Provo "plans," all designed to push people toward cooperative, ecological solutions while undermining the legitimacy of the established order. They outlined many of these in a brochure entitled What the Provos Want , which they released in 1966, shortly before successfully competing for a seat on Amsterdam's City Council ("Vote Provo for a Laugh!" was one of their campaign slogans). Kempton summarizes key points:

* The White Bicycle Plan: In an effort to address traffic congestion in the center of the city, white bicycles would become the common property of all the people of Amsterdam. Automobiles would be excluded from the center of the city.
* The White Chimney Plan: A mandate that chimneys have special built-in incinerators to combat air pollution; with fines for infractions.
* The White Chicken Plan: Amsterdam's police force should be recast as unarmed friendly social workers with candy and band-aids in their pockets.
* The White Dwelling Plan: In an effort to ease the city's housing shortage the city government would publish a weekly list of empty buildings so people without homes could squat them.
* The White Wives Plan: Developed by Irene Donner-Van der Wetering, this plan called for sex education for young people. Among other things it mandated information on contraception, medical clinics for young girls, and teaching family planning.
* The White Schools Plan: Students would have a say in expanding opportunities for democratically organized study and discussion.
* The White City Plan: Amsterdam would become the first urban area committed to implementing Constant Nieuwenhuis's New Babylon.(1)

After reading these "plans," I found myself surprised to realize that today, approximately forty years later, many of their demands ("plans") have become non-controversial elements of mainstream social policy. For example, numerous cities have experimented with free bicycle programs (such as Portland, Madison, and Barcelona), and bike paths and restrictions on vehicular traffic are common in American cities. Likewise, controls on air pollution are pervasive; young people often receive some degree of sex education; and students frequently play a role in setting academic policy at the college and sometimes high school level. Obviously, aspects of their program remain unrealized-I know of no city that publishes lists of squatable buildings, for instance-but, nonetheless, much of the Provo platform has lost its controversial, provocative quality.

This raises a difficult question about the meaning of the Provos' legacy. What if the Provos (and corresponding groups like the Yippies in the United States) ultimately need to be understood less as anarchist instigators than as the avant-garde of a more lenient, culturally flexible, and ecologically friendly capitalism? While it's true that they set stodgy authorities into a frenzy four decades ago, it may be that those authorities were simply anachronistic obstacles and that the Provos actually helped modernize capitalism by undermining their legitimacy.

Issues such as these are beyond the scope of Kempton's book and, for that matter, most works on the history of anarchism. However, I believe that they are worth pursuing and I hope that the publication of this long overdue book on the Provos indicates that a more serious, complicated engagement with our past is on the horizon.

Building Internet of Things with the Arduino (Volume 1), by Charalampos Doukas

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a global network that links physical objects using Cloud computing, web applications, and network communications. It allows devices to communicate with each other, access information on the Internet, store and retrieve data, and interact with users, creating smart, pervasive and always-connected environments.

Despite the Internet of Things being a relatively new concept, there are already a few open platforms available that enable remote and seamless management and visualization of sensor data: Cosm, Nimbits, and ThingSpeak are just a few examples. And Arduino works with all of them.

The Arduino is an incredibly flexible micro-controller and development environment that cannot only be used to control devices, but can also be used to read data from all kinds of sensors. Its simplicity and extensibility, in addition to its great success and adoption by users, has led to the development of a variety of hardware extensions and software libraries that enable wired and wireless communication with the Internet. Arduino is the ideal open hardware platform for experimenting with the world of the Internet of Things.

Great book about Internet of Things and DIY projects:
By David Hayden
This is my first book about arduino and internet communication. I have learned a lot from the book, especially about cloud computing and protocols for communication. I like the way the book is structured. Although I am not very experienced programmer it was easy to build most of the projects on the book. (some of them require various equipment, easy to get but you may consider the cost). I also liked the fact that the author is easily accessible and always willing to answer my questions and help with the projects.

Dr. Doukas is an expert in Microcontrollers, Health Information Technology, Electronics, Bioengineering and Data Analytics as well as so-called Cloud Computing. He provides careful introduction in separate chapters on use of Sensors and Actuators, Microcontrollers, emphasizing the Open Source Arduino, the range and capabilities of Cloud/Web Services for Sensor Data Storage and Analysis. For performing the more advanced projects in the second half of the book some exposure to electronics, programming the Arduino in C and Java Applications is recommended, but these can be easily learned from the sources recommended in the book and an extensive supporting website (search Google for Building Internet of Things) or look at the book's pointer.

This is an excellent introduction to two of the most important technologies in the Maker's and Engineer's toolkit Using Microcontrollers for Sensor and Communication Applications, and the emerging Internet of Things (perhaps the single most important technology advance of the decade).

In addition to the excellent resources provided by this book, the author's website provides downloads of all code, necessary external libraries and magnified full color illustrations. The author is a rising talent in the world of hobbyists and practicing engineers. I heartily recommend this book.

Superb compendium of a dynamic field
By Pete Karagiannis
It's still early days for IoT, yet Charalampos has done a great job of getting information on the quickly emerging world of physical computing out of the academic realm and into the hands of practitioners who just want to 'build stuff'. Like any emerging field, one needs to consider both the fundamentals and the state of the art. The web is great place for "did you hear about X? They just released Y!" But if one lacks the requisite background in Arduino [they may have an electronics, software development or computer science background but not all 3], yet wants to quickly get up to speed on the fundamentals of Arduino and the Internet of Things, this book will give you some intermediate projects to help you build on your more advanced ideas.
