The Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson

A mouse is taking a stroll through the deep, dark wood when along comes a hungry fox, then an owl, and then a snake. The mouse is good enough to eat but smart enough to know this, so he invents . . . the gruffalo! As Mouse explains, the gruffalo is a creature with terrible claws, and terrible tusks in its terrible jaws, and knobbly knees and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of its nose. But Mouse has no worry to show. After all, there’s no such thing as a gruffalo. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
The eponymous character introduced by this British team owes a large debt to Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. When Mouse meets Fox in the "deep dark wood," he invents a story about the gruffalo, described very much like Sendak's fearsome quartet of wild thingsA"He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws." The gullible fox runs away when Mouse tells him that the gruffalo's favorite food is roasted fox. "Silly old Fox!" says Mouse, "Doesn't he know?/ There's no such thing as a gruffalo!" Owl and Snake follow suit until, with a turn of the page, Mouse runs into the creature he has imagined. Quick-thinking Mouse then tells the monster, "I'm the scariest creature in this deep dark wood./ Just walk behind me and soon you'll see,/ Everyone for miles is afraid of me." Fox, Owl and Snake appear to be terrified of the tiny mouse, but readers can plainly see the real object of their fears. By story's end, the gruffalo flees, and Mouse enjoys his nut lunch in peace. Despite the derivative plot line, debut author Donaldson manipulates the repetitive language and rhymes to good advantage, supplying her story with plenty of scary-but-not-too-scary moments. Scheffler's gruffalo may seem a goofy hybrid of Max's wild things, but his cartoonlike illustrations build suspense via spot-art previews of the monster's orange eyes, black tongue and purple prickles until the monster's appearance in full. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-To save himself from being eaten by a fox, an owl, and a snake, an enterprising mouse declares that he is having lunch with a monster whose favorite food just happens to be the animal who is at that moment threatening him. With each telling, the gruffalo becomes more menacing until all of the rodent's tormentors leave him unharmed. The mouse scoffs at them, for everyone knows "There's no such thing as a gruffal...." But a turn of the page reveals-you guessed it-a gruffalo, that thinks the mouse will "...taste good on a slice of bread." Undaunted, the rodent devises a plan to frighten the monster off. Young readers will love the humor in this preposterous story of a trick that backfires and the way the protagonist talks himself out of his difficulties. Best of all, they will relish being in on the joke as they join in the reading of the delightfully repetitious rhyming text. Scheffler's cartoonlike illustrations, rendered in watercolor, colored pencils, and ink, are large and well paced. Facial expressions contrast the animals' alarm with the jaunty nonchalance of the mouse. The double-page spread that reveals the gruffalo-terrible claws, black tongue, poisonous wart, purple prickles, and all-is just scary enough to tickle but not frighten youngsters. Serve this one for a rollicking good time.

From Kirkus Reviews
The action of this rhymed and humorous tale centers upon a mouse who ``took a stroll/through the deep dark wood./A fox saw the mouse/and the mouse looked good.'' The mouse escapes being eaten by telling the fox that he is on his way to meet his friend the gruffalo (a monster of his imagination), whose favorite food is roasted fox. The fox beats a hasty retreat. Similar escapes are in store for an owl and a snake; both hightail it when they learn the particulars: tusks, claws, terrible jaws, eyes orange, tongue black, purple prickles on its back. When the gruffalo suddenly materializes out of the mouse's head and into the forest, the mouse has to think quick, declaring himself inedible as the ``scariest creature in the deep dark wood,'' and inviting the gruffalo to follow him to witness the effect he has on the other creatures. When the gruffalo hears that the mouse's favorite food is gruffalo crumble, he runs away. It's a fairly innocuous tale, with twists that aren't sharp enough and treachery that has no punch. Scheffler's funny scenes prevent the suspense from culminating; all his creatures, predator and prey, are downright lovable. (Picture book. 4-8) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. not original text!

I bought this to replace our current tattered read-so-much version and the copy I received has been altered from the original text! I have no idea why except that some clever fellow decided that Americans wouldn't recognize some of the layout of the language - as the book is written with British wording - ridiculous! The part that says "oh my" fox said should read "I'm off!" Fox said .. this has totally changing the rhyme in some places. Not the book we've grown to love.. sending it back for the same the hard cover one I currently have and hopefully it will not be with the altered text!

A review of the hardcover edition applies to the softcover as well:

The Gruffalo is a delightfully irreverent story about a mouse and an imaginary monster, sure to please grown-ups as well as children. This is a case where you CAN judge the book by its humorous cover, and you won't be disappointed. Axel Scheffler's brightly colored and too-silly-to-be-really-scary illustrations set the tone for this light-hearted romp through multiple layers of comic irony; and Julia Donaldson's marvelous doggerel perfectly realizes the mouse's sprightly character.

It's much more than great fun, though. The Gruffalo also has tremendous resonance with familiar elements of Western culture. This is a story that Carl Jung, Mircea Eliade, and Joseph Campbell all could love. It's a perfect little Hero's Journey: it's got "the deep dark wood," a confrontation with the Monster Within, and a victorious return to the ordinary world where a nut is good. Had this been a fable of Aesop, we could expect our hero to be eaten right in the middle, and we would be left with some such lesson as "Don't be too clever for your own good." Instead, our mythical mouse makes his Eternal Return bearing a subtle wisdom that echoes the teachings of the world's greatest mystics.

The very structure of the story is classic, reminiscent of the great repetitive folk tales, such as "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," "The Three Little Pigs," or "The Little Red Hen." The mouse's encounter with a dangerous predator is repeated with slight variation in the wording three times (yes, three times, as in three crows of a cock, three days in the belly of the fish, three temptations under a bo tree...) then, after a dramatic climax, the story works its way back with another set of three variations as the mouse retraces his steps on the path toward the real climax.

The Gruffalo's greatest fun for grown-ups comes from its heaps of irony. First, there's the expectation of an Aesopian fable. That expectation is thwarted by the clever mouse. Second are the characters of the animals: they're all wrong. The mouse is not meek and fearful; he's bold and confident, a real smart-aleck, in fact. Then the fierce predators turn out to be wimps. Not only that, these are the exact animals that always represent intelligence in Western folk literature -- the clever fox -- the wise owl -- the subtle snake. Here they are all outwitted by the littlest of animals. Third is the basic irony of the mouse's meeting with the gruffalo -- maybe the mouse is not so clever, after all. Fourth, the terrible monster...! Fifth, he went through all that for a nut. Sixth, that story was a profoundly archetypal tale in goofy rhyme, with cartoon pictures. Seventh, I actually wrote this review, and you actually read it. What's next? Am I going to tell you that Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm is a model for education reform? (well . . . yes!)

Finally, The Gruffalo really is a fun and loveable book. One of the best for sharing with your kids.

The Lawudo Lama: Stories of Reincarnation from the Mount Everest Region, by Jamyang Wangmo

The Lawudo Lama presents two life stories along with an extended introduction laying out their social and cultural context. It takes place in the Mount Everest region of Nepal, the home of the famous Sherpa guides, where the people practice Tibetan Buddhism and revere the local lamas and yogis. The stories are centered in Lawudo, a small village in the Khumbu region, and the central figure is the renowned Lawudo Lama.

The first Lawudo Lama portrayed, Lama Kunzang Yeshe (1864-1946), was a yogi of the Nyingma lineage who spent much of his life meditating in a cave near Lawudo, and his life is reconstructed through meticulous research of written and oral histories. The second story is of Kunzang Yeshe's reincarnation, a monk of the Gelug lineage known as Lama Zopa Rinpoche, whose story is given in a first-person narrative. Lama Zopa is well known in the West as the author of several books and as the Spritual Director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), which has more than 100 affiliate Buddhist centers worldwide. Lama Zopa Rinpoche travels and teaches extensively to large audiences and has thousands of students.

The Lawudo Lama will appeal to travelers to Nepal, to Buddhist practitioners, and to scholars trying to understand the culture of the region. It is well documented, and is accompanied by more than 125 color and black and white photos, drawings, lineage charts, and maps.

Review
"In some ways, the present volume is three books in one. First, it is an introduction to Sherpa culture and geography--a rare treat in itself. Second, it is a biography of Lama Kunzang Yeshe, the first Lawudo Lama, which takes into account both his outer and inner life. Third, it is an autobiography of Kunzang Yeshe's reincarnation (tulku) in the form of Thubten Zopa Rinpoche ("Lama Zopa"), who was born into a Sherpa family in Nepal and today is the spiritual director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT). [...] This volume is filled with touching and amazing stories of Tibetan and Nepalese yogis, who have dedicated their whole life to realizing enlightenment and serving the spiritual awakening of others. One gets a good sense of how great one's dedication to the Dharma must be to break through the karmic bonds of conventional life but also that even a lay practitioner can attain a high level of realization. Most importantly, this book offers one wonderful reassurance that great masters and teachings do still exist and are available to anyone who is serious about Dharma practice. " (reviewed by Georg Feuerstein, author of The Yoga Tradition and Yoga For Dummies, for Traditional Yoga Studies Interactive)

"The Lawudo Lama is an amazing tale recounting the lives of both the internationally known Lama Thupten Zopa Rinpoche and his previous incarnation, Lama Kunzang Yeshe. Unlike numerous other studies of Sherpa culture, religion, and history, The Lawudo Lama offers an account from within the tradition, as experienced by the main protagonists. Author Jamyang Wangmo, as one of Lama Zopa's early disciples--also among the few foreigners to have spent long stretches in solitary retreat at the cave hermitages of the Lawudo Lama--is uniquely qualified to write about the subject." (Hubert Decleer, Director of the Tibetan Studies Program for International Training, and author of Lightning Terror)

"A fascinating, formidable read, offering in-depth, incredibly detailed information about Sherpa life in the Himalayas. The biographical stories of two famous lamas, Kunzang Yeshe (1865-1946) and the person who is said to be his reincarnation, Thubten Zopa Rinpoche also are engaging reading. Jamyang Wangmo's 434-page tome will prove a fascinating excursion for anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism and Himalayan culture. Absorbing, descriptive narratives are accompanied by photos of the people mentioned in the stories. The book is laid out in distinct sections, allowing readers to use it as an easy reference. The six appendixes include indexes of persons, deities, places, and text. The cover art of The Lawudo Lama is beautiful and eye-catching. I suggest displaying it with other books about Eastern religions, and recommend it highly to customers interested in Buddhism, reincarnation, and Eastern philosophies." (New Age Retailer)

"I have no doubt that readers of this book will find here encouraging evidence that, even in this day and age, where there is real faith, good motivation, and a great deal of hard work, the Dharma will flourish and grow." (from the foreword by the Dalai Lama)

"This fascinating book provides a unique--earthy yet mystical--insider's view of Himalayan life in general and of Sherpa life in particular. Will be very interesting to anyone who has travelled in the Himalayas and greatly inspiring to anyone who wishes to live a deeply spiritual life. Where else can one find a story in which the characters travel from life to life, continuing to teach, guide and support each other--it will stretch your mind and move your heart." (Lorne Ladner, author of The Lost Art of Compassion)

"Religious biographies form a central part of Tibetan literature, and such accounts are now becoming important for Western Buddhists as well. The Lawudo Lama succeeds in combining the traditional style with a modern narrative and in illuminating the life stories through their context in the traditions of the Khumbu region of Nepal." (Franz-Karl Ehrhard, Professor of Tibetan and Buddhist Studies at Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich)

About the Author
Jamyang Wangmo (Helly Pelaez Bozzi, formerly Jampa Chokyi) was born in Spain in 1945 and trained in law. After spending time in India and Nepal, she decided to take ordination as a Buddhist nun in 1972. A watercolor artist as well, she has spent much of the past few decades doing retreats in Dharamsala, India, and in the Solo Khumbu region of Nepal.

Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. He frequently describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. Born in northeastern Tibet in 1935, he was as a toddler recognized as the incarnation of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama and brought to Tibet's capital, Lhasa. In 1950, Mao Zedong's Communist forces made their first incursions into eastern Tibet, shortly after which the young Dalai Lama assumed the political leadership of his country. He passed his scholastic examinations with honors at the Great Prayer Festival in Lhasa in 1959, the same year Chinese forces occupied the city, forcing His Holiness to escape to India. There he set up the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, working to secure the welfare of the more than 100,000 Tibetan exiles and prevent the destruction of Tibetan culture. In his capacity as a spiritual and political leader, he has traveled to more than sixty-two countries on six continents and met with presidents, popes, and leading scientists to foster dialogue and create a better world. In recognition of his tireless work for the nonviolent liberation of Tibet, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. In 2012, he relinquished political authority in his exile government and turned it over to democratically elected representatives.

His Holiness frequently states that his life is guided by three major commitments: the promotion of basic human values or secular ethics in the interest of human happiness, the fostering of interreligious harmony, and securing the welfare of the Tibetan people, focusing on the survival of their identity, culture, and religion. As a superior scholar trained in the classical texts of the Nalanda tradition of Indian Buddhism, he is able to distill the central tenets of Buddhist philosophy in clear and inspiring language, his gift for pedagogy imbued with his infectious joy. Connecting scientists with Buddhist scholars, he helps unite contemplative and modern modes of investigation, bringing ancient tools and insights to bear on the acute problems facing the contemporary world. His efforts to foster dialogue among leaders of the world's faiths envision a future where people of different beliefs can share the planet in harmony. Wisdom Publications is proud to be the premier publisher of the Dalai Lama's more serious and in-depth works.

The Ancient Egyptian State: The Origins of Egyptian Culture (c. 8000-2000 BC) (Case Studies in Early Societies), by Robert J. Wenke

This book focuses on the development of Egypt in its formative phase, from ca. 5200 BC, when Egyptians first began farming wheat and barley, until 2160 BC, as Egypt's central government weakened and appears to have fallen into disorder. During these millennia, which coincide with the Predynastic, Early Dynastic, and Old Kingdom periods, Egyptian civilization became increasingly complex, and many of its greatest pyramids and other monuments were built. Robert Wenke examines this cycle of ancient Egypt's development by analyzing Egyptological, anthropological, and other forms of evidence, which are set into the larger context of early civilizations that developed in various areas of the world. Written in an accessible style, with many anecdotes, quotations, and personal reflections, this book is intended for use in undergraduate and graduate courses on early civilizations and states.

Excellent Book - Recommend To All
By Isaphiah
I REALLY enjoyed this book and learned a lot from it. This book is very well-written, and I liked the almost conversational tone taken by the author. The text provides a lot of relevant and recent hard data about the Egyptian past, but these sections of the text are nicely broken up with "boxes," which focus on small interesting topics (including the snakes of Egypt, the experience of living in Egyptian rural communities, Herodotus, etc.). Although the introduction states the book is intended for students in courses such as undergrad or grad comparative civilizations, it is very accessible to the general reader. Throughout the book, Wenke reviews the many attempts to develop a general theory of history and he provides many examples of how such attempts to formulate such a theory have failed. He also describes contemporary attempts to recast archaeology into a science or some other form of general understanding.

The strength of the book is that it integrates a highly detailed review of Egypt's archaeological record during a critical period of cultural change, and yet at the same time it integrates this information with current anthropological theory. Wenke also includes beautifully written essays that help one appreciate the beauty of Egypt's monuments, writing system, and the ancient Egyptians' philosophy, i.e. how they made sense of their world. The sections on how archaeological research is done in the field are very instructive and rarely seen in most introductory books on ancient Egypt.

Ok introduction to dynastic Egypt
By Mohe
I'm not exactly clear on what the purpose of this book is. What exactly is its intended audience, as a book on pre-dynastic and Old Kingdom Egypt it is pretty thin, on state formation it is a complete bust and it discusses lots of theory but in a very superficial and unenlightening way. If one is interested in Ancient Egyptian society there are far better books, if one is looking for a book on the origin of state level societies it offers amazingly little, and if one is familiar with Egyptology and looking for an intro to modern archaeological theory, this is a bad place to start. My only guess is that it might make for a good book for an intro archaeology course, because unlike most such books in covers a subject most students are interested in.

My background is in Archaeology of the Americas and I read this because I was hoping to learn something about State formation in Egypt, but having read a couple of general books on the topic, and the brilliant, if somewhat dated Egypt Before the Pharaohs: The Prehistoric Foundation of Egyptian Civilization, almost none of the information was new to me except for details of the author's work in the Faiyum.

The best parts of the book are the authors little digressions about life as an Egyptologist, but this is supposedly a scholarly book and not a journalistic one and they are not particularly informative, though admittedly they are written with considerable charm. The whole tone is very conversational and Wenke seems to be an engaging teacher, but it is pretty thin gruel. Several times I thought, so this is the Bruce Trigger lite version of early Egyptian history, since Wenke spends a lot of time just repeating things from Trigger.

The title would suggest it would focus on the formation of the dynastic state, and its time frame extends into the Pyramid building Old Kingdom, but except in the last couple of pages it has very little to say on this. The subtitle speaks of the origin of Egyptian culture, and while this is discussed at some length, very little in the way of specifics are discussed. Far less in fact than many a scholarly general history of Ancient Egypt would. It is part of a series on the archaeology of ancient societies, but most of the archaeology is described in such broad strokes that it is not very coherent. A lot of time is spent discussing theory as well but with no depth and in a very glancing way.

aesthetic analyses
By Ian K. Hughes
Robert J. Wenke's "The Ancient Egyptian State" is quite remarkable; a book that, based on the details of its publication (part of the Cambridge series "Case Studies in Early Societies" ) and formidable designation (subtitled "Origins of Egyptian Culture c. 8000-2000 BC") would seem to promise very little other than the usual dry-as-desert academic prose through which a reader is fated to sift. And make no mistake, such "sifting" is necessary when going over the many tomes which may, purely in terms of subject matter, constitute excellent scholarship but that are entirely void of aesthetic qualities. Amazingly enough, Wenke (a retired Professor of Anthropology) has produced a work which fuses scholarly rigor and stylistic charm, taking an approach encapsulated in the preface where he writes:

"On the one hand, the reader is asked to use the book to analyze the origins of the Egyptian state and civilization. To do this one must use the analytical methods of anthropology, history, ecology, Egyptology, and other disciplines to try to understand the dynamics of a remarkable process of cultural evolution that occurred in Egypt...At the same time, the reader is invited to use the book simply to experience and enjoy early Egyptian civilization as a unique and fascinating culture...the study of Egypt in this sense needs no justification in terms of an analytical science of history."

Formerly director of the American Research Center in Egypt and veteran of archeological fieldwork throughout the world, Wenke has organized the seven chapters of the book in what I conceive to be four sections;

the first a kind of aesthetic prologue ( Chapter 1- "Significance and Character of Ancient Egyptian Civilization" );

the second comprised of extended "introductions" ( Chapters 2 & 3 ) regarding the evidence and interpretation of Egyptian antiquity;

the third section ( Chapters 4, 5 & 6 ) a chronological rendering of the Neolithic, Predynastic and Dynastic Periods ( down to end of Old Kingdom c.2100 BC ); and

the fourth a brief, epistemologically focused epilogue ( Chapter 7 ) which delves into the various contending scientific and theoretical approaches modern scholars have formulated in their analyses of Egypt and other ancient civilizations.

From the start, a great number of different areas are touched upon-

Egypt's physical environment (geology, climate, natural history, flora/fauna);

"Cultural geography" (demographic factors, agricultural cycles, settlement patterns, relations with neighbors, language, religion, political organization);

Historical background of the "re-discovery" of Egypt in the modern era (19th Century AD) and subsequent endeavors (sublime to ridiculous) in the "Wild Wild East" period of early Egyptology ( includes a nice tribute to the pioneering Flinders Petrie );

Excellent and highly detailed information on modern archeological methods and practices (Wenke gives a personal account of fieldwork at Delta site of Kom el-Hisn) and the stark realities which such labor-intensive work entails (along with alternately amusing and horrifying anecdotes about daily life in camp);

Research projects and how they are conducted, from the beginning stages (funding and proposals, governmental requirements) to the methodology involved. As an example, Wenke describes (again, in quite detailed fashion) a project in which his team attempted to date the Old Kingdom monuments via radiocarbon analyses (this section includes a nice candid photo taken mid-way up Khufu's "Great" Pyramid).

As regards the chronologically based historical section ( Chapters 4,5,6 ), it should be noted that the author does not (as is all too common in general surveys) give short shrift to the Neolithic or Predynastic periods- in fact, the Narmer Palette isn't even covered until page 180 ( exactly halfway through the book ). The point is, Wenke is thorough, even in a book which he readily admits is "neither a comprehensive anthropological analysis nor a detailed Egyptological description of the early Egyptian state".

Which brings to mind another unique (and vitally important) aspect of this book; for all his technical thoroughness, in terms of style Wenke takes what might be termed a humanistic approach, sprinkling the text with literary quotations (mostly poetry, in the form of epigraphs) and dryly humorous asides; effective juxtapositional relief to topics which, if not counterbalanced, tend to weigh (in their numbing granularity) heavily on the reader.

Finally, a mention should be made of the numerous fascinating maps, illustrations, graphs, figures and tables; some are originals with the others taken from various works cited in a generously extensive bibliography. Some of Wenke's information comes from personal correspondence with renowned (and somewhat infamous) experts such as Donald Redford and Zahi Hawass and from (as yet) unpublished work. In any event, a serious student could take several years digesting these works, an interested layman, decades. As an aside, it should be noted that while Wenke cites many authors throughout the course of his book, there are a few names which keep coming to the forefront, in particular Bruce Trigger ("Understanding Early Civilizations") and Barry Kemp ( "Ancient Egypt: Anatomy of a Civilization" ).

To conclude: Robert Wenke has produced an outstanding and unique book, having in addition to the virtues mentioned above, the honesty to admit where evidence is lacking and a willingness to discuss various anthropological and archeological theories and methods in a good-natured, non-combative manner. In sum, an approach both humble and informative, appealing to our higher sense of curiosity and wonder:

"...We need not consider grand questions about the meaning of the past and the `science' of history in order to benefit from the contemplation of Egypt's wonders. Nor do we have to choose between analyses of the Egyptian past and an aesthetic appreciation of that past; these are complementary perspectives. This book allots more space to analyses of the socioeconomic dynamics of the Egyptian past than to appreciation of it, but both are necessary for a comprehensive understanding of this culture."

Angelici presents a trinitarian model, intelligible to a Western context but which could also awake admiration from Greek theologians. Today Richard's dogmatics could represent a bridge for dialogue between different traditions. For the first time this theological masterpiece is being made available, unabridged, in English to allow a broader theological public to benefit from Richard's accomplishments.

Review
‘[Richard of St Victor’s] writing is assured as he sets out an ambitious and systematic statement of why we affirm the nature of God as Trinity. [...] Scholars of this period will be grateful for the first English translation of this important work, while those less familiar with it will find that it helps them to enter into the thinking and culture of a different age.’ (The Revd Dr John Binns Church Times, 21/28 December, 2012)

"...Now, thankfully, we can set those momentous reflections in context with the whole work- its theological foundations and implications, because Angelici has offered a much needed, complete edition of this important work along with helpful commentary and referencing. Perhaps now, the legacy of the Abbey of St Victor will be more widely known and celebrated..." (Taylor Worley Theological book review, Vol. 24, No 2, 2012)

...all theologians are in Angelici’s debt. (Stephen H. Webb Reviews in Religion and Theology, Vol.21, No.1, January 2014)

About the Author
Ruben Angelici is a Graduate of the University of Manchester. He holds degrees and expertise in theology, philosophy, biology, and music. He has been a sessional lecturer in dogmatic and historical theology at Nazarene Theological College, University of Manchester.

Richard presents a compelling argument even though he begs the question on a number of issues. A great work which bridges the space between monastic and scholastic theology.

Rhythm Reading: Elementary through Advanced Training reduces the rhythms of Western music to a series of short, frequently encountered patterns.

Photodiode Amplifiers: OP AMP Solutions, by Jerald Graeme

Light photons impinging upon a semiconductor material in the vicinity of a P-N junction release conduction carriers to produce current flow through the photodiode effect. Photodiode amplifiers convert this current to a voltage in a relationship that remains linear as long as the amplifier eliminates signal voltage swing from the photodiode. For this purpose, the simple current-to-voltage converter or transimpedance amplifier presents a virtual ground to the diode. However, when connected to a photodiode, this simple op amp circuit displays surprising multidimensional constraints that defy conventional op amp intuition.

From the Back Cover
No matter where you are on the learning curve, this one-stop sourcebook delivers the kind of previously hard-to-find practical information you'll appreciate - and the wide range of application circuit alternatives you need - to optimize the noise, offset, bandwidth, and stability performance of photodiode amplifiers. Featuring the insights and accumulated knowledge that could only come from the world's number one authority on the subject, this is no scholarly tome but a hands-on reference - one that provides you with generalized circuit solutions that quickly adapt to specific design and application requirements. Inside, you'll find clear, complete, and largely stand-alone discussions of such topics as how the op amp current-to-voltage converter serves as the basic photodiode amplifier; the role of photodiode capacitance in an amplifier's AC response, along with design equations for optimum phase compensation; noise analysis, identification, and reduction; and wideband, high-gain, and position-sensing photodiode amplifiers. In all, this information-packed guide is without question the photodiode "bible" for anyone dealing with electronic design issues.

Thorough review of photodiodes driving op-amps
By A Customer
This book lives up to its title by giving a thorough review of photodiodes driving op-amps. It does not consider specialized, discrete photodiode amplifiers. By limiting the coverage to op-amps, the bandwidths are necessarily those of op-amps, a few tens of megahertz at the time most of the book was written, perhaps 100 MHz or so today. Truly wide bandwidth solutions (GHz) are left to the imagination of the reader.

Good book for measurement applications of Photodiodes
By Sunny
This book is an excellent reference for understanding the Photodiode circuits. It is gives good coverage of the limitations of the transimpedance amplfier, gives good comparision of different schemes for I to V convertors and covers noise in photodiode circuits extensively. It is a good text for low frequency application . Not meant for real high speed design reference.

Basic stuff. This book collects dust on my lab shelf. Transimpedance amplifiers - you can find this stuff on the web for free. Absolutely no talk of charge integration.

The Army Comes Calling (Final Dawn Book 5), by Darrell Maloney

The group of forty one had never had it easy. In the early days, just before a meteorite named Saris 7 struck the earth, their struggles were mostly those of conscience: how could they let themselves live while so many of their friends and loved ones were dying?
The seven year freeze was no better than a long prison sentence, trapping them within the off-white walls of an abandoned salt mine deep in the bowels of the earth.
But at least it was safe there.
After the thaw, when the survivors broke out into the sunshine again, they faced a new danger. They’d been able to raise livestock, and even a limited number of crops, while locked within the earth. Now there were others who saw what they had and wanted it for themselves.
Others who were more inclined to take things by force, than by reason.
The group fought fierce gun battles to protect what was theirs. Now, when it seemed they’d finally won, they looked forward to a long period of peace.
Then the Army came calling. On a beautiful spring day, out of a clear blue sky, a helicopter landed.
The tall colonel was an officer, but certainly not a gentleman. Neither was he diplomatic. Instead of reason or negotiation, he merely stated his demands.
“By order of the President of the United States, I have the authority to seize your livestock and your crops. Prepare them now. My people will be here to pick them up tomorrow.”
Now the group of forty one had a decision to make. Should they roll over and give everything they’d worked so hard for to the United States Army? Or do they risk everything, including their own lives, to take on the Army and the government, as they’d taken on other outlaws and bullies?
They were a proud and determined bunch. Much too determined to just roll over and surrender.

An easy read with moral undertones.
By Mary P. Lundgren
I enjoy these books as pure entertainment. During the first 3 we marveled at the preparation that went into the survival of the lead characters. The one complaint that I do have is that the characters are too one dimensional - the good guys are good through and through and the bad guys are purely horrible. No one is conflicted or has many sides - like most of us do in real life. Having said that I am committed to each member of the group and have grown to root for the "home team" each time they are challenged.
Eagerly waiting for the next installment - "Missing".

A filler nothing exciting
By Kindle Customer
A filler nothing exciting, blah blah blah. The only good part was when they went to rescue a bunch of hostages from a gang of convicts. I wish more detailed went into that part, but it was okay. In all honestly this 'Kumbaya' attitude will get these people killed more so than, hey let's work together for the greater good. Still the story was interesting.

Kudos!
By SL Veach
This series is fascinating! The Characters are fleshing out with each new book. They started out a little flat, but the plot line was so interesting that I kept buying each new title. If you like apocalyptic sagas you will like this series but you must read them in order. Well worth the price! Mr. Maloney if you ever read this review please can you tell us what happened to the brothers who where the peppers and cold weather hunters? I think they were David's brothers. I really think that their story coming to Salt Mountain would be fascinating! I can only imagine the utter joy of finding family that survived all the destruction. The hope that it would mean! Please keep the story coming!

Excellent!
By Irishlawlass
My first grader really loved this book. She was utterly flabbergasted and outraged by the treatment of women by the Taliban. She was so upset by the way girls are discouraged and prevented from attending school. My gifted, straight-A student who loves school found this to be such an injustice. I used it as a way to empower her and show her how lucky she is to be an American. I also used it as a way to discuss terrorism because despite best efforts -- they hear about it from many places and see it on TV. This book shows that good will always trump evil and that she is not powerless against those cowardly groups who fear her mind and her power. I told her to never accept being told she cannot do whatever she wants in life -- just as Malala does not. We also watched Malala's Noble Peace Prize acceptance speech as a way to follow it up and drive the point home (it's a great speech and kid friendly).

Uplifting and inspiring; strong female character.
By Mom
This is an inspiring story about a brave young woman. Parents should know there is discussion of her being attacked and shot (of course), so be aware for younger or more sensitive readers.

The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the writing style (and/or editing) doesn't flow well. The story starts when Malala is shot, then jumps back in time, jumps a bit forward, then a bit back... without clear indications of timeline until the end. It made the read frustrating. That said, my 11 year old said she noticed that a little in the beginning, but it didn't bother her for the rest of the book, and overall she really liked it.

The overall tone of the book is uplifting and inspiring with a strong female at the center.
